12 sts + 29 rows = 4" [10 cm] in garter st (knit every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. Pattern STITCH (for scarf)

Bias Garter Stitch

Row 1 K 1, k into front and back of next st, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1.

Row 2 Knit.

Repeat Rows 1-2 for Bias Garter Stitch pattern.



With A, cast on 64 sts.

Work even in garter st until piece measures 4 1/2 inches [11 cm] from beginning.

Shape Crown

Row 1 (K 4, k2tog) 10 times, k 4 - 54 sts.

Rows 2-4 Knit.

Row 5 (K 3, k2tog) 10 times, k 4 - 44 sts.

Rows 6-8 Knit.

Row 9 (K 2, k2tog) 10 times, k 4 - 34 sts.

Row 10 Knit.

Row 11 (K 1, k2tog) 11 times, k 1 - 23 sts.

Row 12 Knit.

Row 13 (K 1, k2tog) 7 times, k 2 - 16 sts.

Row 14 K 1, (k2tog) 7 times, k 1 - 9 sts.

Break yarn, leaving a tail long enough to sew seam, draw through remaining sts, and sew seam.

Pom Poms - Make 1 in each color

Wrap yarn around pom pom maker or 1 3/4" [4.5 cm] strip of cardboard; the more wraps, the fuller the pom pom will be.

Carefully slide yarn off of pom pom maker or cardboard.

Tie an 8" [20.5 cm] double strand of yarn tightly around the center.

Knot securely.

Clip loops, fluff pom pom, and trim.


Sew pom poms to top of Hat.

Weave in ends.


With A, cast on 22 sts.

Work in Bias Garter Stitch pattern, working 10 rows A, 10 rows B, 10 rows C.

Repeat stripe sequence until Scarf measures 48" [122 cm].

Bind off loosely.

Weave in ends.
