11 sts + 19 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Stockinette st (k on right side, p on wrong side). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

Cut 35 strands each of A and B, each 22" [56 cm] long, and 6 strands, each 22" [56 cm] long, of C.

Set aside for Fringe.

With A, cast on 35 sts.

Work 4 rows in Garter st (k every row).

Row 1 (right side) K 7, p 1, k 4, p 1, k 16, p 1, k 5.

Row 2 K 2, p 3, k 1, p 16, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 5, k 2.

Repeat Rows 1-2, working in the following color sequence:

16 rows A

12 rows B

16 rows A

2 rows C

16 rows A

24 rows B

32 rows A

8 rows B

2 rows C

6 rows B

18 rows A

20 rows B

Repeat color sequence once more, working final stripe of A until yarn runs out, and working final stripe of B to desired length, making sure to keep about 2 yds [2 m] of B to work final 4 rows and bind off.

With B, work 4 rows in Garter st.

Bind off.

Vertical Lines With crochet hook and holding C behind Scarf, working along a column of purl sts, work 1 slip st for each 2 rows of knitting.

Repeat for remaining 2 columns of purl sts.

Weave in ends.

Fringe Fold fringe in half to form a loop.

Insert crochet hook into edge of Scarf and draw loop through.

Draw ends of fringe through loop and tighten.

With A, work fringe along cast on edge.

With B, work fringe along bind off edge.

With C, work fringe at ends of vertical lines.
