16 sts + 20 rows = 4" [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS), before felting. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Row 1 (RS) With A, knit to location where you would like to place hole.
Cut A, leaving tail on WS.
With B, k 1, bind off 2 sts.
With A, knit to end of row.
Row 2 With A, purl to bound-off sts.
With B, cast on 2 sts.
With A, purl to end of row.
Tie yarn ends together on WS.
Medium Hole Work as for Small Hole, binding off and casting on 3 sts.
Large Hole Work as for Small Hole, binding off and casting on 4 sts.
Scarf will shrink after felting.
Cast on 35 sts.
Work in St st, randomly inserting Small, Medium, and Large Holes as desired, until only a few yards of A remain.
Bind off loosely.
Weave in ends.
Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate.
To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry.
Remove from dryer and pull into shape.
