Stocking Stitch Hat & Scarf

Lion Brand® Magic Stripes

GAUGE:

17 stitches + 21 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) with 2 strands of yarn held together. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Yarn used double throughout. If you start at the same place in the color repetition with both strands, the stripes will line up quite evenly. To work 2 strands from the same ball, pull from the outside and the center at the same time.

HAT
With 2 strands of yarn held together, cast on 80 stitches. Join, being careful not to twist, and knit every stitch around. Place a marker at the beginning of the round. Continue knitting for 6 inches.

Next Round Slip marker, * knit 1 knit 2 together, repeat from * 9 more times – 20 stitches.

Knit 1 round even.

Next Round Slip marker, knit 2 together around – 10 stitches. Cut yarn and use large-eyed, blunt needle to thread tail through remaining stitches. Pull tight to close hole. Weave in ends.

SCARF

With 2 strands of yarn held together, cast on 35 stitches.

Row 1 (Wrong Side) Purl every stitch.

Row 2 (Right Side) Knit every stitch.

Repeat these 2 rows until Scarf is desired length or until you have about 1½ yards left. Bind off. Weave in ends.

Note The Scarf will curl in at the sides. Washing or steaming and laying flat to dry will smooth out the fabric, but it will always curl. That is part of the design.
