6.25 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) in Garter stitch STRETCHED with smaller needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
With smaller needles, cast on 3 stitches.
Row 1 Knit.
Row 2 Knit in front and back of first stitch, knit until one stitch remains, knit in front and back of the last stitch.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 75 inches [190.5 cm] (stretched) across - 115 stitches.
Next Row Knit.
With larger needle, bind off all stitches VERY loosely.
Cut approximately 120 strands of yarn, 20 inches [51 cm] long.
Using one strand per fringe, fold in half to form a loop.
Insert a loop in each increased stitch along angled edges of Shawl, bring ends through loop and tighten.
Trim fringe evenly.
