GAUGE:
2.5 sts and 3.6 rows = 1". BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

RUG: With A, cast on 60 sts. Work in garter st (= k every row) for 8 rows. Cont as foll: Row 1 (RS): With A, k 6; with B, k 48; with A, k 6. Row 2: With A, k 6; with B, p 48; with A, k 6. Rows 3-12: Rep Rows 1 and 2. Row 13: With A, k 6; with B, k 9; with A, k 30, with B, k 9; with A, k 6. Row 14: With A, k 6; with B, p 9; with A, p 30; with B, p 9; with A, k 6. Rows 15-36: Rep Rows 13 and 14. Rows 37 & 39: Rep Row 1. Rows 38 & 40: Rep Row 2. Rows 41-96: Rep Rows 13-40 (twice). Rows 97-104: Rep Rows 1 & 2 (4 times). With A, work in garter st for 8 rows. Bind off.
