First off, let me say that if you order your yarn here, or buy it somewhere else, keep your receipt. I had 7 balls of this yarn left over. I would have had more if I had of knit the shoulders separate instead of at the same time. As it is, I have skeins that are not full, and can not be returned. If you don't have any use for the left over yarn, you will want to return it. I have plenty of use for mine.
I made this for my son. In general, the pattern is easy. However, I Could NOT get the center pattern of chart 2 to make that pattern. See my pictures here. I ripped out that part of my poncho 4 times before I gave up and made my own pattern there. I also had to add a couple extra rows to get my full pattern. It looks great anyway, but I wasted quite a bit of time trying to get the pattern to work. (When I got done, I made a small piece trying ot get the pattern to work, and it still didn't work. I included that picture.)
Also, with this whole pattern being made in stockinette stitch, the edges did the usual curl under thing. Since, I had plenty of yarn left,I did a basic crochet stitch around all curled edges. Now, it hangs flat as it should.
The shoulder seam was huge and in tow colors since you bind off in the middle of the pattern. I didn't like that, so I took it back out and used the 10 1/2 needles to do the pattern, and then used a size 9 needle to do the last row and bind off. It made for a less bulky seam.
My son picked his colors, and asked for a shorter collar, so I made the collar only about 3 1/2 inches. It still folds down. I also used the size 9 needles on the collar and increased ten stitches after picking up 60 to give a slightly looser fit for him.
I told of my adjustments just so others will know they can make adjustments as needed also and still have the pattern work nicely.
I gave this 4 stars only because I couldn't get rows 8, 9, and 10 of chart two to work right. I
It only took me about a week to make this poncho. It's bulky work with this yarn, but nice and warm without being too heavy to wear.
