Knitted Scarf & Hat

GAUGE:
9 sts = 4" (10 cm) in St st (k every round; for flat pieces k on RS, pan WS). 1 scarf pat rep (rows 1-6) = 1¼" (4.5cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Work this new stitch through back loop.
NOTES:
Make hat first, then make scarf desired length, or until third ball of yarn is finished.
HAT Note Change to dpns when necessary. With circular needles, cast on 40 sts. Place marker (pm) and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work 4 rnds in k 1, p 1 rib. Knit 3 rnds. Next (inc) rnd (K 8, M1, pm) 5 times - 45 sts.
Purl 2 rnds; knit 1 rnd. Next (inc) rnd (K 9, M1, sm) 5 times - 50 sts.
Knit 2 rnds; purl 1 rnd. Next (inc) rnd (P 10, M1, sm) 5 times - 55 sts.
Knit 3 rnds. Next (dec) rnd (K 9, k2tog, sm) 5 times - 50 sts. Purl 1 rnd. Next (dec) rnd (P 8, p2tog, sm) 5 times - 45 sts. Knit 1 rnd. Next (dec) rnd (K 7, k2tog, sm) 5 times - 40 sts. Knit 1 rnd. Next (dec) rnd (K 6, k2tog, sm) 5 times - 35 sts. Purl 1 rnd. Next (dec) rnd (P 5, p2tog, sm) 5 times - 30 sts. Next (dec) rnd (K 4, k2tog, sm) 5 times - 25 sts. Next (dec) rnd (K 3, k2tog, sm) 5 times - 20 sts. Next (dec) rnd (K 2, k2tog, sm) 5 times - 15 sts. Next (dec) rnd (K 1, k2tog, sm) 5 times - 10 sts. Next (dec) rnd (P2tog) 5 times - 5 sts. Next (dec) rnd (P2tog) twice, p 1 - 3 sts. Do not fasten off or turn. Place all sts on 1 needle and slide sts to other end of dpn.
Work in I-cord as follows: *K 3, do not turn work. Slide sts to other end of dpn; rep from * for 2". Cut yarn and pull through sts and tighten. Sew end of I-cord to base, forming a loop. Weave in ends.
SCARF With circular needles, cast on 25 sts; do not join. Work back and forth in rows. Rib Row 1 (RS) K 2, *p 1, k 1; rep from * to last 3 sts, p 1, k 2. Rib Row 2 K 3, *p 1, k 1; rep from * to last 2 sts, k 2. Rib Rows 3-4 Rep Rows 1-2 once.
Begin pattern as follows: Row 1 (RS) Knit. Row 2 K 2, P to last 2 sts, k 2. Rows 3-4 Rep Rows 1-2 once. Row 5 Purl. Row 6 Knit. Rep Rows 1-6 for pattern until piece measures approximately 56" from beginning, end after Row 4 of pattern. Work Rib Rows 1-4; bind off. Weave in ends.

A 29 inch circular needle is way to big for a cast on of 40 stitches for the hat, I used a 24 inch circular needle.
