Cardboard for pompom
9 sts + 12 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (knit on right side, purl on wrong side). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
With CC, cast on 16 sts.
Work 8 rows in Garter st (knit every row).
Join MC and work first and last 3 sts of each row in Garter st, center 10 sts in St st.
Continue in pattern as established in stripe sequence as follows: *4 rows MC, 4 rows CC; repeat from * 22 more times, carrying unused color loosely along side.
Work 4 rows more in MC, then work 8 rows Garter st in CC.
Bind off all sts.
Weave in ends.
Make four 4 1/4" [11.5 cm] pompoms with MC as follows.
Cut a strip of cardboard 4 1/4" [11.5 cm] wide.
Wrap MC around cardboard - the more wraps, the fuller your pompom will be.
Cut yarn leading to skein and carefully slide yarn off cardboard.
Cut a long piece of yarn and double it; carefully slide it under the center of the pompom and tie tightly with a double knot.
Clip the loops, fluff out your pompom, and trim.
Use the tails of the knotted strand to attach pompoms to short ends of Scarf, one at each corner.
