Pierrot Hooded Cape

Lion Brand® Homespun®

GAUGE:

10 sts and 12 rows to 4 in. [10cm] over sc using K/10.5 (6.5mm) crochet hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Work in continuous rnds. Do not join end of rnds with sl st. Instead work first st of next rnd directly into first st of previous rnd. Place a marker at beg of rnd and move it up as you work. This marker will mark beg of rnds and center back.

Editor’s Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.

CAPE
Starting at lower edge with A, ch 116 (120, 128), join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1
Sc in each ch around - 116 (120, 128) sts. Work even in sc for 10 more rnds. Count 29 (30, 32) sts to each side of center back marker. and place another marker at each side -58 (60, 64) sts marked for each of front and back. Note The foll decs will not line up perfectly at each side marker. This will avoid the creation of a visible dec line. Stagger the decs working as close as possible to the side markers.

Dec 1 st (sc2tog) at each side marker on next rnd and then every 6th (6th, 5th) rnd twice more-11 0 (114, 122) sts.

Mountain Peak Chart
Note:
To change colors in the middle of a rnd, work last st in old color to point where 2 lps rem on hook, yo with new color, complete st as usual and cont with new color. Use a separate ball of yarn for each color area. Do not carry yarn not in use along WS of work; do not work over yarn not in use. Twist the yarns on the WS of the work to avoid creating a gap.

Keeping marker at beg of rnd at center back, reposition side markers, if necessary, so that there are exactly 55 (57, 61) sts for each of front and back. Beg chart at each side edge (rep chart twice around cape), work 11 (12, 13)-rnd chart to completion.

Cont with B, work 3 (3, 5) rnds even. Dec 1 st at each side marker on next rnd and then every 4th rnd 4 times more-100 (104, 112) sts.

Shoulder Shaping
Keeping center back marker in same place, reposition side markers, if necessary, so that there are exactly 50 (52, 56) sts for front and back.
Dec rnd
Work in sc to 2 sts before first side marker, sc2tog before and after marker, sc to next side marker, sc2tog before and after marker - 96 (100, 108) sts. Rep dec rnd on each of next 11 (12, 14) rnds - 52 sts. Fasten off.

Hood
Mark center 14 sts of front for neck opening. With RS facing, join B in st after last marked st (right side of neck), ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each of next 37 sts - 38 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work even in sc until. hood measures 3 in. [7.5 cm] from beg.
Next rnd Sc in each of first 18 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc to end - 40 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work even in sc until hood measures 13 in.[33 cm] from beg.
Next rnd Sl st across first 7 sts, sc in each st to last 7 sts, leave last 7 sts unworked. Ch l, turn. Rep last rnd once more.
Next rnd Sc in each of next 12 sts. Fasten off.

Finishing
Fold top of hood in half and sew seam tog on WS. With C, work 1 rnd of sc around hood and front neck and 1, rnd around lower edge of cape. With yarn needle and C, embroider an outline with back sts along top of mountain peaks, extending the line into the A areas as shown in photograph. With B, embroider an outline with back sts for a snowcap on each peak as shown in photograph.

Tassel
Cut forty 20 in. [51 cm] strands of B. Tie all strands tog in center with a 10 in. [25.5 cm] length of B. Fold all strands in half at tie and wrap them tog with an additional strand of C about 2 in.[5 cm] below fold. Tuck in and trim all ends and tie to peak of hood.
